“Bohemian Rhapsody” was released in 2018 and tells the story of Queen’s front man, Freddie Mercury, from the time he meets his future band mates in 1970 to the pinnacle of their success at the Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium in 1985.
The Movie It’s early 1970 and Farrokh Bulsara aka Freddie, who moved from Zanzibar to England with his parents and sister, works as a baggage handler at London’s Heathrow Airport. Freddie dreams of a bigger and better things for his life. He goes to a local pub to see the band, Smile. As fate would have it, not only does he meet Mary Austin, who would become his girlfriend and lifelong friend, Freddie also meets guitarist Brian May, and drummer, Roger Taylor who need a new lead singer for their band. Freddie auditions on the spot and gets the job.
With bassist, John Deacon, on board, the band focuses on touring throughout Britain. To book time at a recording studio, the band makes a desperate decision and sells their touring van. The session results in Queen being signed by EMI records and their breakthrough into the U.S. market where they decide to tour.
It’s during this time that Freddie begins to question his own sexuality, which ultimately leads to his split with Mary as he begins a relationship with manager, Paul Prenter. The relationship with Prenter becomes toxic resulting in drugs, debauchery and a split within the band when Freddie decides to seek a solo career.
Queen seems to be just about over when they’re offered a spot on the Live Aid roster. However, this bit of information is kept from Freddie by Prenter. When Mary visits and mentions the opportunity to play live in front of billions of people, Freddie, upset that Prenter has kept the news secret, cuts all ties with him, resulting in Prenter going public about Freddie’s lifestyle and relationships.
With Queen on the cusp of one of their biggest performances of their career, Freddie is given the devastating news that he has contracted AIDS. Not willing to let the diagnosis hinder him, Freddie soldiers on to give a performance of a lifetime on the world stage.
The Cast Sacha Baron Cohen had been attached to play Freddie Mercury for a few years before leaving the project. Rami Malek stepped in and would go on to win the 2019 Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Actor. “Bohemian Rhapsody” also stars Lucy Boynton as Mary, Gwilym Lee as Brian May, Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor, Joseph Mazzello as John Deacon and Allen Leech as Paul Prenter.
