Alfred Kralik works as a salesman in Budapest at the Matuschek and Company store. When not working, he’s been exchanging letters with an unknown lady who he has fallen in love with. Meanwhile, Mr. Matuschek has hired the eager Klara as a new salesperson, much to Kralik’s chagrin. The two immediately come to dislike each other—but Klara has other things in mind, as she too, also has a secret pen pal that she’s fallen for. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching “The Shop Around the Corner”.

· Kralik is talking to Klara about a job. Mr. Matuschek walks through and overhears Kralik talking about knowing what he would say. In the close-up, when Matuschek first hears him, he’s holding his glasses, which are hooked on a cord that dangles from his neck, in his right hand. It cuts to a wider view and Mr. Matuschek’s right hand is behind his back and the glasses are dangling on his vest.

· Kralik and Klara are arguing in the back room. As they’re arguing, he gives her four boxes to carry. He picks up his stack of five boxes and opens the door. Klara tells him she doesn’t like him and they walk through the door into the shop. Klara is now carrying five boxes and Kralik is carrying four.

· Pirovitch is talking to Kralik, encouraging him not to leave his job. In the wider view, when Kralik says, “I’m not a coward”, he’s shown setting the box down. It cuts to a close-up when Pirovitch mentions he has a family and Kralik is holding the box in his left hand.

· Mr. Matuschek tells his employees they can go home and they will finish the window displays tomorrow. Klara rushes into the next room, grabs her things and runs out. When she passes the others at the door, it’s Pirovitch, Ilona, Flora and then Vadas walking through. It cuts to a front, wider view as Klara runs through the store and it’s Flora at the end, near the door.

· Kralik pushes Vadas into the music boxes sending everything tumbling to the floor. The music boxes change position on the floor between of Vadas when he’s first on the floor to the farther front view as the others rush over to close the boxes.

“The Shop Around the Corner” (1940) stars James Stewart, Margaret Sullavan, Frank Morgan, Joseph Schildkraut, Sara Haden, Felix Bressart, William Tracy and Inez Courtney. It runs 99 minutes and is Unrated.
