Waiting for Poe

Waiting for Poe
Poe, whose birth name is Anne Decatur Danielewski, is a adult alternative singer songwriter from Provo, Utah who had her first album released in 1995, Hello, and her second and last album released in 2000, Haunted. After much struggle on her part, both albums were re-released in 2004. Still the question sits like an elephant in the room: What about her makes her relevant today?

Singles from Hello include "Angry Johnny," "Trigger Happy Jack (Drive by a Go-Go)" and the title track, "Hello." The album achieved moderate success, at least enough to get her noticed on radio and video stations, as well as some praise that acknowledged the original style she brought to her music.

The next album, Haunted, is one of the finest cover-to-cover albums this writer has yet to encounter. Voice recordings of her deceased father, a film director from Poland and professor at Brigham Young University, played within songs and between tracks add to the truly haunting qualities that mix well with her voice and songwriting skills to produce the end result. Singles include "Hey Pretty," "Walk the Walk" and "Wild." Other songs of note are the title track, "Haunted" and "Control," but there really isn't a weak song within the CD.

Disputes with Atlantic Records, her label for these two albums, has contributed to her inability to produce new pieces of work and her dedicated fans have been waiting a long time for something to be released. After two relatively obscure albums, it is a testimony to her talent and the strength of these works that she still has many waiting to hear from her.

Haunted was released at the same time as Mark Z. Danielewski's, her brother, postmodern novel House of Leaves and the two toured Borders Books and Music stores to promote them.

She has been referenced in movies such as 10 Things I Hate About You, appeared in the movie Gossip singing a cover of The Go-Gos "Our Lips are Sealed," and had a song (Control) and character in the PlayStation game Apocalypse.

After such a promising start as a truly innovated and hugely talented singer songwriter, it is with growing impatience that we await a follow up. It would simply be a travesty if something more didn't come from such a talent. Have a listen to her and grab these albums and hope that we will soon be hearing a lot more from Poe.
