Ode to the Barista
Alina Rios
Oh glorious being,
Beautiful to all but yourself!
You hide yourself in a slouch,
A modestly bent head,
And yet your eyes shock with life and truth.
Your features dark against your cloud-pale skin.
A waterfall of starless night hair
Cascades down your back,
A smile sleeps between your lips.
With these, you draw me out
From my world of small worries and disappointments
Into the world as it truly is.
"What can i start for you?" you ask
And my heart wakes up and answers,
The moon, the stars, the wind, the sun...
For we live in a near-permanent darkness of our souls
With grey clouds hanging over, threatening to drown us.
And then, as if this weren´t enough,
You make me a cup of steaming life to drink
That smells like wet streets and cigarettes,
Bakeries and friends´ kitchens,
Crumpled bed sheets and seaside cottages...
You wake me to myself.
