She's Such a Nice Person, Isn't She?
Cynthia Parker
In the South, they teach their women
to be nice. Polite. Magnolia proper.
I’m so tired of being nice.
Do as you’re told. Obey. Marry
The adulterous, lying bastard with
The snake oil smile. Always smile.
Keep the tears inside. And the anger.
Wear a black eye tattoo’d on your
Peach-soft skin. Skillfully lie about your
Clumsy feet. Finger-shush the children
When anyone asks. Keep those ever-
Present secrets. Hold those stagnant,
Foul-smelling beasts deep in your
Gut. Speak politely, don’t gag. Fold
Your hands in your lap. Cross your ankles.
Comply. Spawn another brood-mare
Generation of nice Southern daughters.
I’m so damn tired of being nice!
