The Day is Done
Carol Lynn Stevenson Grellas
Dear Lord we’re losing all our extra stuff
from cable shows to HD flat-screens too
and yet I’ve said my prayers each night I swear
but Father bills are piling high and you
don’t answer when the evening’s day is through,
my grocery list is trimmed, our dinner plate
now half as full; I’ve cut out every treat;
informed the kids we need to drop some weight,
repaired our shoes instead of buying new
and shopped at Thrifty’s, brought home day-old bread
as if the crust had special nutrients
from lasting longer on the shelf instead--
I hear my mother preaching ´less is more´
but damn, it’s just plain harder to be poor!
