My Promise to You
Lori Bernard
I’m exhausted.
He’s crying again.
I have to get up and comfort him.
Okay, I’ll go.
He needs me there.
I put on my socks and pull back my hair.
I stumble.
It’s dark and I can’t see.
My husband can’t go because he needs me.
Come to me.
Mommy’s here.
I wipe away his face of tears.
Here, my child.
I give him my breast.
He’s so content against my chest.
He’s asleep.
I lay him down.
I escape away without a sound.
Goodnight, baby.
I will see you soon.
I will gladly get up again for you.
