Aftermath
Lisa Hodges
There is silence;
no hushed conversation
or looks of concern,
no more people at my door
offering plates of food I cannot eat.
I am alone.
It was just a week ago
I last saw your face -
seven tear-filled days
that mark the beginning
of a lifetime without you.
For the hundredth time
I put the phone to my ear,
dial the number and hear your voice;
"hello, weŽre not here right now
so leave a message
and weŽll call you back soon"
Now a thundering emptiness
floods my soul,
wave after wave
beating in time
with my aching heart.
