Milk Chocolate Haystack Recipe
The traditional butterscotch haystack recipe is an easy, no bake dessert containing only three ingredients. For the chocolate haystack version, simply substitute milk chocolate chips for the butterscotch chips. For chocolate lovers, this simple substitution creates a fun, chocolate holiday treat recipe.
If you’re pressed for time this holiday season, this recipe is also freezer friendly.
Ingredients:
1 6-ounce can of peanuts
1 5-ounce can of chow mein noodles
1 12-ounce bag of milk chocolate chips
Directions:
1. Melt chocolate chips over the stove top, stirring often until melted through (or melt in a microwave safe bowl, stirring every 30 seconds until melted).
2. Pour the melted chocolate into a large mixing bowl.
3. Add the cans of peanuts and chow mein noodles.
4. Mix well, stiffing to combine the chocolate evenly over the peanuts and chow mein noodles.
5. Spread a sheet of wax paper on the counter, or line a cookie sheet with wax paper for easy clean up.
6. Drop spoonfuls of the haystack mixture onto the wax paper, making them as small or large as you prefer.
7. Let cool, and store in an airtight container.
Recipe Tips and Variations:
1. Dark or white chocolate chips may be substituted for the milk chocolate chips. Along the same lines, drizzle some melted white chocolate chips over the milk or dark chocolate haystacks, and top with some red and green sprinkles for a festive holiday touch.
2. Experiment with different types of peanuts for different flavors. Salted cameral, honey roasted and lightly salted all work well in this recipe, and each brings its own unique flavor twist to the haystacks.
3. Not a fan of chow mein noodles? Substitute Fiber One (or similar in shape and texture) cereal in place of the chow mein noodles.
4. Some fun additions include dried cranberries, raisons, and pecans. There are endless possibilities to make this recipe suitable to your liking, while keeping it simple.
