A Christian's Focus
The Christian walk is a joyful experience but not always easy. I know where I want to be, but my mind wanders and I easily fall into old habits. How often do I find I’ve stepped onto the wrong road?
Proverbs 4:25-27 tells me to look straight ahead, giving careful thought to the path I’m travelling. Be steadfast and don’t turn away from that direction. (steadfast means constant, loyal, steady, devout.)
In Philippians 3:13-14, Paul tells about his journey. He talks about forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, pressing on toward the goal.
As Christians, I have a goal. To glorify God and grow in my faith.
Thinking back many years, as a sixteen-year-old in driver education, I had the experience of being steadfast. Being responsible for a large expensive piece of machinery on the open road grabbed my attention and held it. Driving was a new experience. I was nervous. Guiding that car had my full attention. I found it easy to keep my eyes on the road.
That steadfast focus didn't last long.
I was awarded my drivers license and became comfortable with driving. As a result of that comfort, I would be easily distracted. My parents and other passengers felt the need to continually remind me, "Keep your eyes on the road." Every time those eyes of mine lingered on something at the side of the road, the car would drift in the wrong direction, frightening both passengers and onlookers.
As a driver, keeping my eyes on the road got me to my destination and kept me from landing where I’d never planned to be—such as a ditch.
So, in the troubled times we live in, when there is so much ugly news, as well as attractive distractions. How do we keep our eyes on the goal?
As a Christian it has been suggested that I start each day with Bible study or a Scripture related devotional. Beginning each new day by adjusting my focus on God of Creation, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace, Bread of Life, Light of the World, Good Shepherd, the Resurrection, the Way, the Truth and the Life.
As Scripture commands, think about what is true, what is noble, right and pure. Think about what is lovely and admirable. If anything is excellent or worthy of praise, think about these things. (Philippians 4:8)
The goal of knowing Jesus Christ and following Him is worth developing laser focus.

Laser focus
Many successful people, in their self-help books, will tell about maintaining laser focus on the goal. Laser-sharp focus is the ability to cut through distractions by giving 100 percent of your attention to your goal. Not an easy feat.
The Bible verses mentioned above – Philippians and Proverbs - describe laser focus.
